Grab A Scythe & Feel Some Feelings: Catch Its for June 1, 2022

Welcome to Catch it at the Comic Shop, where the Panel Patter team looks at what's coming out at your favorite store or digital device this week. Each one of us that participates picks up to five items due out this week, with a little bit about why we like them. (NOTE: We use solicitation material for this, so if we miss creators, please talk to your publisher!) Sometimes we might only have a few items to share, other weeks, keeping it to five will make for hard choices. Here's what the team wanted to highlight this week...

Sean's Picks:

The Pass GN by Espé and published by Graphic Mundi
Graphic Mundi found another Espé book to translate as they bring us The Pass, and I’m left here still picking myself up from last year’s Espé. The Parakeet (from last year and now Eisner nominated) was one of my favorite books of 2021 and I’d assume this one will end up on my list once again. I haven’t seen or read The Pass yet but Espé is one of those type of creators where anything that is written may as well just be auto shipped to my house after my bank account gets auto debited. The depth and unapologetic transparency brought in his narrative and the illustrative delivery make the reader more aware of the meaning of self than one thought possible. A very simplistic visual with soul-crushing relatability is the undeniable, albeit refreshing, reason that stories such as this are cherished and adored. If you’re in the mood to feel some feelings this week, go grab this latest Espé book. The Pass will surely knock you off your feet and on to the floor.

Grim #1 2nd Printing by Stephanie Phillips, Flaviano, Rico Renzi & Tom Napolitano and published by BOOM!
I don’t make a habit of doing this but with a book as fun and fresh as Grim I couldn’t stop myself. The BOOM! Studios debut from Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano will be back on shelves this week with its second printing. I gotta tell you, the premise of this story is wild and outrageous and the artwork give it an extra lift of excitement as readers follow one (of many) Reapers when her scythe goes missing. Things ..get a bit cat-chase-mouse ..in a way that I can only imagine will get more fun as we get further into the story. I’m anxious for the second issue and the second printing of the first issue may just have to hold me over until that time comes. And now’s time for you to go make sure you’re up to speed. There’s no excuses.
