Catch It at the Comic Shop October 2nd, 2019

Welcome to Catch it at the Comic Shop, where the Panel Patter team looks at what's coming out at your favorite store or digital device this week. Each one of us that participates picks up to five items due out this week, with a little bit about why we like them. (NOTE: We use solicitation material for this, so if we miss creators, please talk to your publisher!) Sometimes we might only have a few items to share, other weeks, keeping it to five will make for hard choices. Here's what the team wanted to highlight this week...

Neil's Pick:

Vampire State Building #1 by Ange, Patrick Renault, Charlie Adlard and Sebastien Gerard published by Ablaze Comics
Originally published back in April 2019 by Soliel, this French comic now has an English translation thanks to new publisher Ablaze Comics. Writers Ange, Patrick Renault may not be well known names but with Charlie Adlard pencilling this could be something Walking Dead fans may lap up. Set within the 102 floors of the Empire State Building, the story sees the main protagonist attending a farewell party when a horde of Vampire's attack. A simple premise but if like me you loved films like The Raid and Dredd, where a tower block is under siege and all out chaos ensued, this book could be the horror equivalent. I'm hoping for gore, insane vampire death/impalements and something that makes this story not just a coven of Vampire's on a rampage. Halloween is close and horror titles will surely pick up steam throughout October, but I am really holding out on this one being something extra special.

James' Picks:

Copra #1 by Michel Fiffe, published by Image Comics
Copra is a terrific, fun, gritty superhero comic that is an homage to classic 80's Suicide Squad but is really much more than that. Written and drawn by the fantastic Michel Fiffe, Copra was self-published for a long time and only recently came to Image, who reissued the earlier trade paperback collections. Fiffe is really an incredible visual stylist, and has a terrific handle on tough-guy characters in comics. Years ago I reviewed the first volume, and I continue to highly recommend the series.

Mind MGMT TP Omnibus Vol. 3 by Matt Kindt, published by Dark Horse Comics
So I'm not really recommending you just pick up the third volume of a Mind MGMT omnibus. What I'm actually recommending is that you go out and read the entire series. It's an absolute masterpiece and has become one of my favorite comics of all time. Matt Kindt is writer and artist, and is telling an expansive tale of mind control, collective amnesia, people with extraordinary abilities, secret agencies, "fake news", and much more. I reviewed the series years ago, and it remains a favorite.

Rob's Picks:

Nancy Vol 1 by Olivia Jaimes, published by AMP adult
If you haven't been online except to read our awesome site, you might not be  aware of the amazing revamp of the Nancy daily strip, by "Olivia Jaimes" (a pseudonym as I understand things), who draws the strip to look like classic Nancy, but has an amazing ability to make her feel like a modern young woman while still keeping very much in the spirit of the originals--and I mean the OLD OLD originals. It's a great commentary on our time but also a lot of great dumb gags--everything a comic strip can be. I'm looking forward to reading this all together, as this collection pulls together the first nine months of what I hope will be a long, long run by this young woman on the title.

Edgar Allan Poe's Snifter of Terror TPB Vol 01 by Various, published by Ahoy Comics
A horror anthology passed through the Mad Magazine blender, this ambitious series from Ahoy is a trade I've been waiting for! With great work that mixes classic Poe tales (skewered of course) alongside humorous takes, all with Poe along for the ride (whether he likes it or not, because he's long dead!) as the host. Ahoy's comics are very eclectic and also very fun. If you like your horror with a comedy bent, add this to your October reading collection
